Kiss and Tell

Andy forgot his photo I.D at home; he had never ridden a plane before as an unaccompanied minor, and did not foresee in there being need for proof of his obvious existence. His mother disagreed. Already being twenty minutes behind schedule, she hurriedly steered the car in the opposite direction (unperturbed by the traffic around her) and drove back toward the house with sheer determination to make it to the airport on time.
Andy was off to visit his dad’s house. His parents had been divorced two years now, and although they had been fighting for most of his natural born life, he hardly liked dividing his time among them. And despite his parents lingering dysfunctional relationship, Andy remained a 16 year old romantic; a romantic who, by virtue of his lack of “game,” had yet to receive his first kiss. Andy figured girls would rather spend time with nice boys—someone who they could also call a friend. Andy failed to realize that teenage girls have yet to learn that they like nice boys and still dare to chase only after the bad ones. What Andy really needed, aside from an ego boost, was a guide; a girl to tell it to him straight, with no bows and ribbons attached. Thanks to Delta flight 475 from LaGuardia, he found her.
Her name was Melody, but she preferred being called Mel. Mel was 15 and possibly the most attractive girl Andy had ever sat next to in his life—be it on a plane, on a bus, or in the waiting room at the DMV. But what Andy found most attractive about Mel, aside from her green ocean like eyes and cascading Auburn hair, was her loud mouth and brutal honesty. Mel was the type of girl Andy had read and heard about but had never actually met. She was a city girl, born and raised in Manhattan. That said, after he confided in her all of his woes, she laid it to him bluntly:
“You’re too nice. You have to be unattainable. That drives us crazy, but in a good way.”
Andy had never felt so at ease around a girl, and yet so intrigued. He was trying to heed her advice, but hiding his attraction was like trying to hide a third eyeball. He found himself wishing to remain forever in the air, with Mel. Not sharing Andy’s sentiments, the pilot announced the plains descent. Finding himself overwhelmed with emotions of anxiety and excitement, before he had time to think about it, Andy grabbed Mel’s hand, turned her face toward his, and kissed her. And in pulling away, still confused as to what just happened, he saw a grin on her face more beautiful than the Grand Canyon.
“You’re a great kisser,” she said.
Once they left the plane, Andy never saw Mel again, but he will always remember her and smile—his first kiss, his best kiss, and the key to his new found everlasting confidence.
